This essay aims to analyze basic education as a privileged space for the formation of compassion, understood as an ethical value and fundamental formative practice in the face of educational models marked by individualism and the fragmentation of knowledge. The central question of the study is how the school can contribute to the construction of empathetic subjects, capable of recognizing the other and themselves in a relational and supportive perspective. Methodologically, this is a qualitative, theoretical-reflective research study, based on the analysis of Karen Armstrong's work "12 Steps to a Compassionate Life," in dialogue with contributions from History, Biology, and Philosophy. The theoretical framework draws on authors and historical figures such as Socrates, Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama, understood as historical examples of compassionate practices and ethical hospitality. It is argued that recognizing the biological and historical dimension of human selfishness requires intentional educational processes aimed at developing empathy, through the construction of new habits of thought, feeling, and action. Finally, it is argued that basic education, especially through art and dialogue, has the potential to promote formative exercises that foster wisdom, coexistence, and the overcoming of egocentrism, proposing a continuous didactic path of learning and sharing between educators and students.
